Saxon, drugs and rock ‘n roll: the outlandish tale of two Auckland brothers

Lloyd Saxon in Auckland's CBD - he loves to go running, saying it's a far better high than drugs.

Lloyd Saxon in Auckland’s CBD – he loves to go running, saying it’s a far better high than drugs.

Lloyd Saxon rummages through memorabilia in his van: the briefcase he had when he was arrested 26 years ago (busted open by police); a Penthouse magazine featuring a spread on he and his brother’s drug smuggling exploits; a giant-sized reward poster in his brother’s name.

Finally he finds the document he’s looking for, one he’s kept close for a quarter of a century – a ledger, neatly written in black biro with a list of names and numbers next to each.

It was written by his brother, music tour manager Ian Hall Saxon, and produced at trial as evidence of what happened to one of Australia’s biggest ever hashish shipments.

About a week ago the owner of one of the most haunting, if not downright disturbing, pieces of memorabilia in the history of American popular culture opened his safety deposit box to retrieve it. For almost 22 years it had never seen the light of day. He then mailed off his unholy relic to Lelands for an auction this fall.

The extreme rarity is an invitation signed by O.J. Simpson on June 12, 1994 hours before his ex-wife’s murder. The consignor, a boy at the time, had joined Simpson in the audience for a dance recital, featuring, among others, Simpson’s daughter, Sydney, who was eight-years old then.

Simpsonologists regard the dance recital as a key event in the true crime drama .
